If you've spent more than five minutes browsing monitor listings on Amazon or Newegg, you've probably hit the same wall every PC gamer eventually runs into: do you go for resolution or refresh rate? The 1440p 144Hz crowd swears by buttery-smooth motion. The 4K 60Hz camp insists nothing beats pixel-perfect detail. We decided to stop arguing in the comments section and actually test both setups back-to-back.

We spent several weeks gaming on a 27-inch 1440p 144Hz IPS panel and a 27-inch 4K 60Hz OLED across a mix of titles — Cyberpunk 2077, Black Myth: Wukong, and Valorant — using a mid-to-high-range GPU (an RTX 4070 Super, which represents a realistic budget for most serious PC gamers in the US right now). Here's what we found.

What You're Actually Trading Off

Before we get into game-specific results, it helps to understand what each setup is actually optimizing for.

A 1440p 144Hz monitor gives you noticeably more pixels than 1080p (roughly 77% more), while also pushing frames fast enough that motion looks genuinely fluid. At 144 frames per second, animations feel responsive, fast-moving enemies don't blur into mush, and your inputs translate to the screen almost instantly.

A 4K 60Hz monitor, on the other hand, is all about visual fidelity. At 3840x2160, individual pixels essentially disappear at normal viewing distances. Textures look sharper, distant details pop, and cinematic scenes can genuinely take your breath away. The trade-off is that 60fps has a ceiling — and in action-heavy moments, it can start to feel choppy compared to higher refresh options.

Neither setup is objectively wrong. They're just answering different questions.

Cyberpunk 2077: Where 4K Earns Its Keep

Night City was practically designed to make 4K monitors look incredible. Running through the neon-soaked streets of Watson or cruising the highways south of the city, the jump in visual detail from 1440p to 4K is legitimately striking. Reflections in puddles, the text on distant billboards, individual strands of NPCs' hair — all of it resolves more crisply at 4K.

That said, pushing Cyberpunk 2077 to 4K at high settings on an RTX 4070 Super without DLSS is a workout. Native 4K framerates hovered around 45–55fps in dense urban areas, which put us squarely in uncomfortable territory for a game with a lot of fast camera movement. Enabling DLSS Quality mode brought that up to a more comfortable 70–80fps, which helped — but you're still not hitting 100fps.

At 1440p 144Hz, the same GPU sailed through at 90–120fps on High settings, with Ultra settings dropping to a still-playable 75–95fps range. The game felt more alive, more reactive. For a title you're exploring and soaking in, 4K has the visual edge. For actually playing it without wincing at frame pacing, 1440p wins.

Black Myth: Wukong: A Toss-Up That Reveals Your Priorities

Black Myth: Wukong is arguably the most visually ambitious game to release in years, and it showed us something interesting: the gap between 1440p and 4K was less dramatic than expected in motion, but massive in still frames and cutscenes.

During boss fights — which are fast, chaotic, and punishing — the 144Hz advantage was undeniable. Tracking the Wandering Wight's attacks or dodging the Wolf Guai's lunges felt meaningfully easier on the high-refresh panel. At 60fps, there was a subtle but real sense of input lag and motion blur that made precise timing harder.

Cutscenes and slower exploration segments, though? The 4K OLED made us genuinely stop and stare. The detail in character models, the depth of the environments — it's the kind of visual quality that reminds you why you built a gaming PC in the first place.

If you're the type who pauses to appreciate the artistry, 4K is your jam. If you're focused on actually clearing those brutal boss encounters, 1440p 144Hz keeps you sharper.

Valorant: This One Isn't Even Close

Competitive shooters are where the refresh rate argument stops being a debate and becomes a verdict. In Valorant, the RTX 4070 Super was pushing well over 200fps at 1440p — and even capped at 144Hz, the difference in how the game felt compared to 60fps was immediately obvious to everyone on our team, including people who claimed they couldn't tell the difference.

Enemies peeking corners were easier to track. Recoil patterns felt more controllable. The overall experience had a crispness that made us actively worse at the game when we switched back to 60fps.

At 4K, the GPU held steady around 120–140fps in Valorant thanks to the game's relatively modest engine — so technically you could run it at 4K without hitting a performance wall. But if you're serious about ranked play, you want every frame your GPU can produce, and 1440p is the smarter choice for keeping framerates maxed.

The GPU Budget Reality Check

So Which Monitor Actually Wins?

For most PC gamers in the US right now — especially those running mid-range GPUs and playing a mix of competitive and single-player titles — 1440p 144Hz is the more versatile and satisfying daily driver. It's the setup that makes the widest range of games feel great without needing a top-shelf GPU to back it up.

4K 60Hz earns its place for the gamer who prioritizes visual immersion above all else, plays slower-paced genres like RPGs and strategy games, and has the GPU horsepower to back it up. It's a genuinely gorgeous experience — just not always the most practical one.

Our honest advice? If you're on the fence, go 1440p 144Hz and bank the price difference toward your next GPU upgrade. You'll thank yourself later.
